Sunday, January 19th 2025 – The Meaning of Gardens / John MacLeod
John MacLeod, a retired landscape architect (see biography below) will offer a collective reflection on what gardens are, what they mean to us, what they offer to our communities and to our world – touching on the idea of gardens dedicated to world peace.
John MacLeod is a Canadian landscape architect, originally from Manitoba. He practiced professionally in Québec City before joining the School of Landscape Architecture at l’Université de Montréal as a professor in 1985.
In private practice, he collaborated on the production of the master plan for the Plains of Abraham National Historic Park in Québec City (1981) and of the initial projects of the redevelopment of the Old Port of Québec (1981-85), as well as dozens of projects for municipal parks, schoolyards, promenades, and other recreational facilities in municipalities and national parks in different regions of Québec.
During his thirty years at the University of Montreal, four as director of the school, he taught community design inspired by sustainable development, site engineering and professional practice. His research has largely focused on the documentation, creation and enhancement of parks and gardens dedicated to world peace.
In 1992, working on a project supported by the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects and in collaboration with the International Institute for Peace through Tourism, he participated actively in a series of workshops which led to the dedication of over four hundred peace parks across Canada.Between 2011 and 2015 he taught landscape architecture and urban design regularly at different universities in China.
Retired since 2013, he has offered his services as a volunteer consultant in landscape architecture in Canada, Israel, Rwanda, Mauritius, Bahrain and Kenya. But, above all, he considers himself a citizen of the world and a passionate gardener, happy to rediscover the wonders of the world as the grandfather of nine grandchildren.
